Editorial and evidence policy

Everything ThisWay tells you comes from published research or official guidance, shows its source, and is checked on a schedule. This is how we do it, for every ThisWay service.

Last updated 30 September 2026 · Version 1.0

In short

  • Every step, statistic and guide shows its source and the date we last checked it.
  • We rank next steps and places to get help, never treatments.
  • We sell nothing but the guidance: no adverts, sponsors, affiliate links or paid placement.
  • If we get something wrong, we correct it openly: within 24 hours if it affects safety.

Where our information comes from

We only use published sources, in this order of priority:

  1. UK clinical guidance: NICE guidelines and, for Scotland, SIGN and Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
  2. Official UK information: NHS websites for each UK nation, GOV.UK and the devolved governments, NHS England and NHS Business Services Authority.
  3. Professional bodies: for example the British Menopause Society, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Midwives.
  4. Peer-reviewed research and large UK surveys, with the size and limits of the study made clear.

We don't use company marketing, testimonials or opinion to fill gaps. When the evidence is thin or mixed, we say so.

How we decide what goes in

  • Next steps are ranked by evidence, using fixed rules built from these sources. Every step shows why it's there and where the reason comes from.
  • We rank next steps and places to get help, never treatments. Treatment options are listed alphabetically, with what guidance says about each, so you can discuss them with a professional.
  • We never diagnose, or tell anyone how likely they are to have a condition. ThisWay is designed to stay within the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency's guidance for software that signposts people to care, and we're taking independent regulatory advice to confirm it.
  • Four nations. NHS routes, waits and entitlements differ between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We say which nation each step applies to.

How we check and update

  • Every guide and step shows "Last checked" and "Next check" dates.
  • We re-check every source at least every 12 months, and sooner where things change often, such as ADHD waiting times or benefit rates (every 3 to 6 months).
  • When NICE, the NHS or a key professional body publishes new guidance, we review what's affected within 30 days.
  • Every guide is checked against its sources by a second person before it's published.
  • Urgent messages and red flags are reviewed by a qualified clinician before each service opens, and after any change.

How we use AI tools

We use AI tools to help us research, draft and build ThisWay. They never have the final word: a person checks every fact, figure and quote against the original source before it's published, and the source is shown so you can check it too. We never put members' personal or health information into AI tools, and never use it to train AI models.

Staying independent

  • We're funded by memberships. Individuals, employers (through ThisWay at Work) and community partners pay us for access. Nobody else does.
  • No adverts, sponsors or affiliate links. No one can pay to appear in a pathway, a guide or a list of services.
  • No products. We don't sell supplements, tests, treatments or anything else. ThisWay is run by OCCO Wellbeing Ltd, which also sells OCCO London productivity stationery; ThisWay never promotes OCCO London products.
  • Employers don't influence content. ThisWay at Work customers get the same content as everyone else.
  • Conflicts of interest. Anyone who writes or reviews for ThisWay tells us about any interests that could affect their work, such as payments from companies that make treatments. We keep a record, and a person with a conflict doesn't review that topic.

Inclusive writing

We write for women of every age, ethnicity, body, sexuality and background, and so that trans men and non-binary people feel welcome too. We use plain English, explain any medical words, and avoid blame or shame.

Corrections

If you spot a mistake, email hello@thisway.health with "Correction" in the subject.

  • Safety-related errors are fixed, or the content taken down until fixed, within 24 hours.
  • Other confirmed errors are fixed within 5 working days.
  • Significant corrections are noted at the end of the guide or step, with the date.
